There is nothing like a clean sheet to open a season, and our Troy Athens Red Hawks gave us one Thursday night, dispatching the Northville Mustangs 3-0 to start the year on the right foot. Costa Ameli put us on the board with 20:09 left in the first half, finishing from the right wing on a through ball — and it was our first shot of any kind, a strike that told you exactly how this night would go. Marko Dzebo was the engine, assisting on all three goals, including the long ball out of the back that set up Aiden Wolfe just after coming off the bench with 15:31 to play. Ameli chipped home a second right after halftime, and Gavin Gelement preserved the shutout. The sweetest part: this is Kirk Hodges' debut back at his alma mater, the Eastern Michigan man returning home after stops with Detroit Catholic Central and the Michigan Nationals. A semifinal team a year ago, and now off and running again. Next up is Grand Blanc at Atwood Stadium for the Motor City Classic on Saturday, then OAA Red play Tuesday at Oxford.
