Here's a name every Michigan prep fan ought to know cold: Betty Wroubel. Our Pontiac Notre Dame Prep coach sits fourth on the entire all-time national wins list, and as of Wednesday she'd pushed her career mark to 1,807 — chasing Ann Schilling of Bayside Academy down in Daphne, Ala., who leads their little two-horse race at 1,812. Wroubel has run the Notre Dame Prep program since 1994, and what a run it's been — four Finals titles in Class B/Division 2, and back in 2007 they became the first Oakland County program in history to win at the Finals. That's not a footnote. That's the whole banner. This year's group sits at 14-12-2, led by returning all-state senior Nicole McDowell, who's already committed to play collegiately at Rider University in New Jersey. There's real talent still walking through that gym, and a coach with 1,807 reasons to trust it. Only Jodi Manore (2,231) and Jack Magelssen (1,832) stand higher on the all-time state ledger. Wroubel is writing herself right into that company, one win at a time.
