Red Wings Name Shawn Horcoff Interim GM as the Search Rolls On

So Steve Yzerman is out and Shawn Horcoff is in — at least for now — as our Red Wings promote the assistant general manager to interim GM, with the day-to-day roster calls, the salary cap and hockey operations personnel all landing on his desk and reporting straight up to CEO Chris Ilitch. Yzerman, the franchise legend and Hall of Fame player we hired back in 2019, stepped away in July and stays on as senior adviser to Ilitch. The hard truth of his run: seven seasons at the helm, and we missed the playoffs in every single one. We haven't tasted the postseason since 2016. Horcoff, 47, is no stranger here — six seasons as director of player development, three as assistant director of player personnel, then the assistant GM job in February 2022. Ilitch says he remains in the mix for the permanent role, and this comes just a week after Tigers GM Jeff Greenberg pulled his own name from consideration. So who ends up steering this ship?
