Nine runs, no answer. The Tigers poured it on Monday night at Comerica Park, running away with a 9-2 win over the Washington Nationals in front of 21,121, and the story on the mound was a fresh face doing exactly what we hoped. River Ryan — the arm we got back from the Dodgers in the Tarik Skubal trade — made his Detroit debut and tossed three scoreless innings, two hits, a walk, two strikeouts. Then Keider Montero kept the zeroes coming with four scoreless in relief. The bats did not lounge around either. We jumped to a 2-0 first-inning lead, Javier Báez cracked his third homer of the year, Ben Malgeri went deep for a three-run shot, and Spencer Torkelson launched his 25th to make it 9-0 by the fifth. Loud numbers, no need to dress them up. Elimination came a day earlier, sure, but there is still baseball worth watching: Ryan is expected to start Sunday's finale, and the day before that, Justin Verlander makes his final major league start. Drew Anderson goes Tuesday against Jackson Kent.
