There's no sugarcoating a 27-10 road loss at No. 3 Notre Dame, but if you watched our defense Saturday night in the 80th meeting of this old series, you saw a group that showed up. The Irish came in averaging 46.5 points a game — 41 on Wisconsin, 52 on Rice last week — and we held them to a season-low 27. That's the story nobody expected. Senior linebacker Jordan Hall was everywhere, pacing the defense with a game-high 13 tackles, the second-most of his career. Tre Bell added a season-high five stops and a pass break-up, and Devin Vaught and Dion Crawford chipped in five apiece. On offense, graduate QB Cam Fancher scored the first touchdown of his Spartan career on a 15-yard scamper, and Rodney Bullard Jr. hauled in a 53-yard strike, our longest reception of the season. Notre Dame now leads the all-time series 50-29-1, but eleven of the last 17 in this rivalry have been one-score games. We've got Nebraska next, kicking off at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, and this defense has our attention.
